It tells of an experiment. Armed with a borrowed million-pound bank note, the narrator is able to rise to prosperity as well as marriage with a wealthy heiress, merely by impressing people with the uncashed note (Emerson, Mark Twain: A Literary Life). In addition to the title story, the volume includes eight other Twain pieces some non-fiction, essays, sketches etc.

"The Million Pound Bank Note" by the American author Mark Twain, was first published in 1893. The story takes place in Victorian London, where the story's protagonist/narrator, Henry Adams, has ended up penniless and in rags after a boating accident in the US swept him out to sea. Two very rich and eccentric brothers spot him and give him an envelope with no information. Inside the envelope is a single peerless bank note for one million pounds sterling.
